bikini shaving tips and tricks

The sun is shining, temps are warming up, and you know what that means – you might be showing more skin and slipping into some pretty lacy things, like our new summer collection.

But wearing lingerie means, for many women, shaving more often, especially down there. Shaving sensitive skin like your bikini line can be tricky and require a little more maintenance, but trust us – putting in some extra time and effort is worth it for that confidence boost.

While shaving is a personal preference and not necessary, if you like the smooth and hair-free look, keep reading for our six easy bikini shaving tips and tricks for a feel-good summer.

1. A SUCCESSFUL BIKINI SHAVE BEINGS WITH PREP

While this may seem extra, do not, we repeat, do not skip the skin prep when shaving your intimate areas. Of all our bikini shaving tips and tricks, this one is key for smooth, bump-free skin.
The last thing you want is to be itchy and irritated when you are about to get frisky with your partner.
So what do you need to do to prep your skin before shaving? Here are three steps we suggest:

  1. If you’re brand new to shaving down there, trimming your hair with a trimmer or scissors first can help you get a closer shave while making it easier to see.

  2. Next, jump into a warm shower or bath and soak for 10 minutes to heat up and soften the outer layer of your skin. This helps reduce the dreaded razor burn and painful red bumps.

  3. Use a washcloth or a gentle exfoliating scrub to rub off dead skin cells and unclog your pores. This important step also helps bring up any ingrown hairs and prevents them.

2. CHOOSE YOUR RAZOR CAREFULLY

Not all razors are created equal, particularly when it comes to shaving your nether bits. Just as critical as it is to prep your skin properly, it's equally vital to pick a razor that’s sharp enough for the closest shave possible.

When shopping for the right razor, check for these features:

  • Multiple blades: the more the better! Razors with more blades mean fewer times that you need to pass over an area to remove your hair.

  • Sharp blades: make sure the blade is clean and sharp for every shave. Choosing a razor with disposable blades, like this one, rather than a tossable razor, may be the better option for shaving your intimate areas.

  • Special features: irritation defense bars or lubrication cushions give some extra protection and provide moisture.

  • Ergonomic handle: helps you get to those hard-to-reach areas and maintain a good grip. This isn’t an area you want to nick yourself!

PROTIP: Some women prefer to use men’s razors

because they’re designed to cut thicker, coarser hair and range from one to five blades. Just don’t mix up your razor with your partner’s.

Let’s move on to the next one of our bikini shaving tips and tricks.

3. HOW TO SHAVE TO AVOID INGROWN HAIRS AND RED BUMPS

Ok, now it’s time to talk about the right technique for how to shave your bikini line.
Before you grab your razor, there are a few things to know that can make a huge difference in avoiding those pesky ingrown hairs and tingling red rashes.

Here are some skin-saving bikini shaving tips and tricks:

  • Use a mirror to help you get a better view and lessen your chances of cutting yourself. A small mirror that suctions to your shower wall with a bendable base keeps you hands-free and allows you to see every angle.

  • Apply shaving cream, gel, or lotion to reduce the friction and abrasion on your skin while shaving. Look for ones that include moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, coconut, or olive oil.

  • Shave in the direction of your hair growth, not against the grain (this helps prevent ingrown hairs). Keep the razor pointing downward with light pressure, especially if using a razor with multiple blades.

  • Work on small sections at a time to ensure a clean, thorough shave.

PROTIP: Clean your razor after each use with alcohol and warm water. Store it in a dry, clean space to avoid contamination and bacteria growth. If there’s any rust or if you’ve used the razor more than a few times, it's time to toss it out or change the blade.

4. SHAVING AFTERCARE - MOISTURIZE

Prepping your skin before shaving is essential for a smooth bikini line, but so is the aftercare. While shaving removes hair, it can also damage your sensitive and delicate skin, leading to irritation and discomfort.
Yes, we know, another step but we promise – once you get a good routine down, you can do it all pretty quickly. Here are our recommended bikini shaving tips and tricks for aftercare:

  • Once done shaving and rinsing off, grab a cold compress and put it on the shaved area for ten minutes to reduce any swelling or burning.

  • Dry off and apply a fragrance-free moisturizing oil or lotion to rehydrate your skin. Continue applying till the next day to lock in the moisture. We love this lotion with its nourishing ingredients like squalene oil and oat extract.

5. WHAT TO DO IF INGROWN HAIRS AND RED BUMPS SHOW UP

If ingrown hairs or bumps do make an appearance, even after using these bikini shaving tips and tricks, don’t worry – there are still things you can do to minimize or get rid of them.
Here’s what to do:

  • Apply aloe vera gel to the area for 30 minutes to soothe inflammation and redness.
  • Use a warm compress soaked in tea tree oil on and off until the ingrown hair comes out of the skin. (Tea tree oil is another natural anti-inflammatory agent and antiseptic to ward off bacteria).
  • A warm Epsom salt bath for 20 minutes is a great way to calm down irritation.
  • For stubborn ingrown hairs, try using a chemical exfoliator with lactic or glycolic acid, like this one, to release the hair and avoid infection.

PROTIP: Infected ingrown hairs can look like a pimple; it may be tempting to pop it – don’t. It can lead to scarring or spread the infection. Use an acne spot treatment to help heal the area. Wait to shave again until the infection is gone.

6. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SHAVE?

How frequently you shave your bikini line is going to depend on a few factors: like how quickly your hair grows, if you want to be hair-free daily or just when showing off your legs, and how sensitive your skin is to bumps and ingrown hairs.
Shaving every other day is what’s recommended most by dermatologists to maintain a hairless look and to lessen the chances of razor burn and irritation. However, if you only want to shave for certain events (like swimming or when wearing lingerie), you can skip shaving till then.
